Celebrating a Life of Service: Nonagenarian Awards – Vereeniging Branch – 27 February 2025

In a touching ceremony, held at the Choose Life Church in Pretoria, on Thursday, February, 27th, the spirit of camaraderie and respect within the Gunners’ community was vividly displayed as one of its oldest members, Gunner John Andries (Blackie) Swartz, was celebrated upon reaching the grand age of ninety. This remarkable milestone was commemorated with the presentation of a nonagenarian certificate, a symbol of his long-lived dedication and service.

The honours were bestowed by fellow Gunner, Renier Henning, Chairman of the Vereeniging Branch. Gunner Roy Andersen, National President of the Gunners’ Association of South Africa, ensured that this special occasion was marked with the dignity it deserved. Gunner Blackie Swartz, whose life has spanned the most turbulent periods of the 20th century, has been a beacon of resilience and dedication. In addition to Gunner Renier and Gunner Roy and his wife Ronel, the ceremony was attended by Gunner Wolf Wassermeier, National Deputy President of the Gunners’ Association of South Africa, Gunner Piet Langenhoven (nonagenarian) and close friends of Gunner Blackie from the Choose Life Church in Moreletta Park, Pretoria.

His service, which started at the age of 16, characterized by unwavering commitment and bravery, has not only contributed to the legacy of the Gunners but has also served as an inspiring testament to the values of loyalty, passion for reconciliation, courage, and solidarity.
