Gun Spotting on the East Rand

On Friday 10 March 2023, Gunners Roy Andersen, Wolf Wassermeier and Errol Brits had a successful visit to the East Rand during which they added ten guns to the Heritage Gun Register.

The group at Apex Military Base

APEX BASE

The tour started at Apex Base where they were impressively hosted by Lt Col Martin Ntsieng. The group was joined by Gnr Kevin Fenton. The guns at Apex Base were repainted in 2021 by RSM MWO J Claasen and are generally in good condition.

SPRINGS MEMORIAL

The second stop on the tour was the refurbished Springs Memorial. A prominent Springs businessman, Antonio Da Cruz, has launched a series of projects to protect and restore the heritage of the City. He has found champions to take ownership of three projects:

  • Springs Memorial – Dirk Human
  • MOTH Memorial – Antonio Da Cruz
  • Springs Outdoor Museum – Errol Brits

Mr Dirk Human, through his company JR Mackays, has sponsored the full restoration of the Springs Memorial, its fountain and garden. The standard of the work is truly excellent.

MOTH MEMORIAL

Mr Da Cruz, with the support of a local insurance company, Savvy Insurance Brokers and Windy Corner Shellhole (Brakpan), is restoring and fencing off the MOTH Memorial.

He plans an annual march from the Springs Memorial to the MOTH Memorial.

SPRINGS OUTDOOR MUSEUM

An outdoor museum of mining equipment and artillery pieces is planned. The terrain is currently being prepared. The identified artillery pieces require restoration so there is much to be done.

CONGRATULATIONS AND BEST WISHES TO THE BUSINESSMEN, MOTHS AND GUNNERS ON THESE GREAT PROJECTS.
