GUNNERS’ ASSOCIATION HERITAGE GUN RESTORATION REPORT NO 31

The Heritage Gun Register and the Data Base now contain 529 guns of which 355 (67%)
have been inspected over the past three years.
The Register has been reviewed by Pat Irwin of Grahamstown who was the author of the
original Register on which our Register is based. His inputs, which I am busy working on, will
greatly enrich the Register and Data Base.

In the meantime, work on restoring/respraying of guns continues apace:

GV IV – School of Artillery

Gunner Bloem arranged for this launcher to be resprayed. The Gunners’ Association
sponsored the paint. This gun is believed to have fired during Op Askari.

5” BL 60 Pounder – School of Artillery

This gun which stands in front of the hall at School of Artillery, has also been resprayed by
Gnr Bloem and his staff.

Gun 7458 – German Howitzer 1875 on Spandau Chassis

This howitzer was donated by the Ditsong National Museum of Military History in
Saxonwold, is currently being restored by the Springs Mine and Military Museum. A picture
will be published when the work is complete and it is on display.

GV1 – King Cetshwayo Artillery Regiment

The ceremonial troop of four GV1 guns has been fully restored by the Artillery Formation.
They were available for the Gunners’ Memorial Service, in September 2024.

My thanks to all who have supported the preservation of our Heritage Guns.
