The 73rd annual National Gunners Memorial service was held at the memorial garden in Potchefstroom on Sunday 18 May 2025. The service was well attended by Gunners past and present as well as a number of veterans’ organisations, VIPs from Army Headquarters and foreign military attachés.
It was poignant this year that shortly before the service the association was advised of the death of Honorary Life Vice President Niel Wiid who had served the association as national chairman.
A silence shrouded the crowd who stood to pay respect to Mrs K Moreo the widow of the late L Bdr IM Moreo who was killed in action in the DRC earlier this year. Mrs Moreo laid a wreath in memory of her late husband.

The service was followed the traditional lunch and awards presentation where Gunner Errol Britz was awarded the title of HLVP for his role in the creation of the Springs Mining and Military Museum. Dirk Human and Tony Da Cruz were made honorary members of the SA Gunners’ Association.

At another location a group of gunners assembled for the traditional breaking of the glass bottom of the beer mug of the late Gunner André Claassen.
