On Friday, 21 March, a dedicated team led by Okkie Jooste embarked on an important mission as part of Project Bosuil. This historical site, which had fallen into a state of neglect, was in dire need of care and attention.

Overgrown grass, scattered debris, and a deteriorating nameplate marked the cemetery, diminishing its significance as a place of remembrance. However, the team’s unwavering commitment to preserving history shone through as they undertook the challenging task of cleaning and restoring the site. Armed with tools and determination, they cut the grass, collected and removed all the rubbish, and meticulously secured the nameplate back onto the wall.

This initiative not only revitalized the physical space but also honoured the memory of those who rest there. The Winburg Concentration Camp Cemetery stands as a reminder of a painful yet significant chapter in history, and through efforts like Project Bosuil, its legacy is safeguarded for future generations.
The successful cleanup serves as an inspiring example of what can be achieved through collective effort and respect for heritage. Thanks to Okkie Jooste and the dedicated team, the site now reflects the dignity and reverence it deserves. Their work ensures that the memories of those who suffered in the past will not be forgotten, and that the cemetery remains a place of reflection and tribute.
