

On Sunday, 21 September 2025, the City of Johannesburg, Speaker of Council, Cllr Margaret Arnolds and the SA Legion held the 107th Commemoration Service of the Battle of Square Hill.
The Battle of Square Hill took place on the night of 17/18 September 1918. The brave Cape Corps broke through the Turkish lines during the night, capturing 8 Turkish Officers, 160 Turkish soldiers and 181 other Turks.
The annual Memorial Parade in honour of those Cape Corps members, who served and sacrificed took place at the Anglo-Boer War Memorial, in Saxonwold, Johannesburg.


Representing the Gunners were several members who proudly attended the parade. Pictured from left to right is special Gnr Peter Boberg, Gnr Renier Henning, Gnr Roy Andersen and Gnr Wolf Wassermeier.
Gnr Renier Henning, Deputy Chairman of the Gunners’ Association of South Africa, laid a wreath on behalf of the Gunners’ Association.
The highlight of the mornings proceedings was the wreath layer who is 101 years old, laying a wreath on behalf of the family.
