Gun 289 – Battle of Sandfontein

This QF 13 Pdr Gun (barrel number 289) was fired at the Battle of Sandfontein on 26
September, 1914 by the Transvaal Horse Artillery (now named Sandfontein Artillery
Regiment). It was captured by the German Forces and on surrender by the South
African Forces thrown into Lake Otjikoto in the then northern German South West
Africa. It was recovered from the lake by the South Africans in 1915 and returned to
service.
The gun, as pictured above, now stands at the South African Gunners’ National
Memorial in Potchefstroom, Republic of South Africa.
The sister gun (barrel number 288) which also participated in the Battle of
Sandfontein, was only recovered from Lake Otjikoto in 1983 and is currently on
display in the Tsumeb Museum, Republic of Namibia.
