GUNNERS PLAY A KEY ROLE IN THE REFURBISHING OF THE DITSONG SA NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MILITARY HISTORY – SAXONWOLD
GV 5 and GV 6 – after maintenance
The Museum Building and Development Trust chaired by Gnr Roy Andersen has spent approximately R1,6 million in supporting the Director, Allan Sinclair and his staff, in ensuring that the Museum remains in world class condition. In this process, Gunners have played a key role.
Gunner Bobby Marks has addressed many electrical issues including replacing all the lights in the exhibition halls with more efficient ones. He also installed an inverter and lithium battery in the auditorium which now has an up-to-date audio-visual system.
The SA Army Artillery Formation, lead by Gnr Niemand, has assisted with the maintenance of the guns including the replacement of the taillights of the GV5 and GV6.

Gunner Albert Pestana has taken on the major task, assisted by Gnr Trevor Taute and the Johannesburg Branch of the Gunners’ Association, of tidying up and restructuring the workshop.
He is also arranging the next Education and Maintenance Day at the Museum during which inter alia, all guns will be cleaned. This will be held on Saturday 20 July 2024.
The next exhibit to be refurbished by the Museum staff is the Russian D30 122mm gun. Gunners will also assist with this project.

Gunners and the Gunners’ Association are very involved in driving the Museum Building and Development Trust. In addition to Gnr Andersen, Gunners Pestana, Bothe and Wilsworth all make significant contributions of time and expertise.
Gunners have also supported Gnr Errol Brits at the new Springs Mine and Military Museum with sourcing artillery exhibits and limited fund raising.
