The Annual Gunners’ Memorial in Cape Town took place on Sunday, 16 March, in the historic Company’s Garden. This solemn and significant event was well attended by members of the Artillery (Arty) and Air Defence Artillery (ADA) Formations, along with their respective Unit Commanders and Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs). Maj Gen Mazibuko, General of the Gunners and DoD Inspector General also attended this great event.

The memorial service brought together a broad spectrum of attendees, reflecting the deep respect and appreciation for the sacrifices made by the gunners. Veteran organizations, local regiments, and representatives from ASB Youngsfield joined the gathering, standing in solidarity with serving members. The presence of the Diplomatic Corps and City Councilors further underscored the importance of this annual commemoration.

Adding to the ceremonial grandeur, Fort Ikapa personnel, Sea Cadets, and members of the South African Navy also participated, paying their respects to the legacy of those who served in the artillery. The shared commitment to honouring fallen comrades was evident throughout the proceedings, reinforcing the unity and camaraderie within the military community.
The resounding theme of the event was embodied in the artillery motto, Ubique – meaning “Everywhere.” This powerful word serves as a reminder of the unwavering dedication of the gunners, both past and present, who have stood ready to serve wherever duty calls.

The Annual Gunners’ Memorial continues to be a poignant occasion, ensuring that the courage and sacrifices of those who have served in the artillery are never forgotten.
